Astrology Planet Symbolism and How it Works

The zodiac planets have a unique lesson that enables our greatest spiritual growth. They are the main players in the astrology chart.

Each of them plays a very unique role in making you the person that you are now and the person that you have the potential of becoming in the future.

Whereas the zodiac houses or horoscope houses serve as the setting of where all of the action is taking place and the astrological signs and their various meanings serve as the style of expression of each planet, the zodiac planets are the actual workhorses of the astrology chart otherwise known as the astrological wheel.

The sun and moon in astrology are called "the lights", but just for simplicity's sake, they are often lumped in with the other zodiac planets. The remaining zodiac planets that are used are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Listed below are some brief thumbnail sketches of the symbolic nature of each of the zodiac planets. Click on the links to read more about each astrology symbol.

In Astrology, Sun Signs are by far the most well known. The Sun in the astrological wheel can be thought of as the king of your chart. The location of the sun in your astrology chart is where there is a major source of emphasis in the affairs of that particular astrology house. Here's another analogy: think of the location of the sun as the area of your life where a light switch has been turned on.

The Moon symbol shows your private self, your emotional nature, and where or what makes you feel the most secure.

The Mercury symbol shows your intellect, how you relate to others, and how you communicate with others.

The Venus symbol shows your love nature and what things you value in this life.

The Mars symbol shows your masculine side and thus your assertive drive to express yourself. It shows what you're the most passionate about. It also represents your sexual nature and desires.

The Jupiter symbol shows where you tend to be the most fortunate and/or areas where you could have a natural ability to prosper in some way.

The Saturn symbol shows where you must face past life karma in some way. The affairs of the particular house that Saturn resides in are usually a source of much frustration earlier in life. As you mature and face the obstacles that Saturn puts in your way, this area of your life actually turns into a source of great personal strength and wisdom for you.

The Uranus symbol shows where you must awaken to new ways of thinking and/or being in the particular house that it resides in. There will quite likely be very surprising and sometimes shocking events that occur in the house that Uranus resides in. Uranus also shows where you can discover and cultivate your own particular brand of genius in your life.

The Neptune symbol shows how you deceive yourself and/or shoot yourself in the foot in some way. This is where we tend to wear the proverbial rose-colored glasses and have difficulty seeing things as they really are. Think of Neptune's location in your astrology chart as where you can potentially drive into a fog of some sort and, thus, must be very cautious. On a more positive note, Neptune shows your spiritual nature and what ways you can grow spiritually.

The Pluto symbol shows where you are directly challenged to transform yourself. Much like the legend of the fiery phoenix, you must die in some way and be reborn from the ashes into a much stronger and resolute person. All that is superficial and meaningless in your life must be uprooted and thrown out like the weeds in a garden.
