Astrology Aspects

Planetary Handshake

In this section, I will discuss astrology aspects and go into more detail about specific planetary aspects that are currently in effect, but first let's take a look to see exactly what aspect are in the first place.

Astrology aspects describe the "relationship" between 2 planets. This relationship is determined by the good old high school geometry that we all had to learn. I remember thinking as a teenager that learning Geometry was such a waste of time. I was certain that I never was going to use any of that boring stuff. Boy was I wrong! Oh well, at least I was paying attention.

Let's take a look at the major astrology aspects. There are only 5 to learn.

The first of these is the conjunction. This is when 2 planets are said to be "aligned" together. The angle between the planets, therefore, is 0 degrees. This is a called an "orb." The conjunction can be thought of as a marriage or partnership. The 2 planets in question are basically shaking hands and have agreed to work together so there is a blending of the two planetary energies.

The sextile is formed when 2 planets are 60 degrees apart. A sextile causes the 2 planets to become "excited" due to the similar type of energetic expression they both possess. Therefore, this is considered to be a harmonious aspect that gives some type of opportunity of expression in the individual's astrology chart.

A square aspect is formed when 2 planets make a 90 degree angle. This particular aspect is considered to be the most difficult aspect due to the fact that the 2 planets in question have very different styles of expression. Therefore, they are in a disagreement of sorts.

Square aspects in our astrology charts cause a lot of stress when we're younger because we don't really understand how to deal with the tension within ourselves. They present challenges that we need to overcome. Once we come to grips with it, however, squares can become a source of a real strength. The best thing about them is that they give us an uneasy sense that something is wrong in our life. Therefore, it motivates us to get off our butts and get to work.

A trine is formed when 2 planets are 120 degrees apart. It forms one side of a triangle therefore trine is short for triangle. It is considered to be the most harmonious aspect because the 2 planets forming the angle having a very similar style of expression so they're basically in agreement. Trines present us with natural gifts of expression that we're born with. The only problem is that we might take them for granted and not even think of them as gifts. We may think our abilities aren't special at all and that anyone could do it. Therefore, the danger is that trines can make us complacent and lazy if we take our gifts for granted.

The last aspect is called an opposition. This is when 2 planets form a 180 degree angle. Therefore, they are literally on opposite sides and are opposing each other. Think of 2 people playing tug-of-war. The 2 planets have opposite ways of looking at things and therefore, have to reach a compromise of some sort for this energy to flow more smoothly. Oppositions always show were we are out of balance in our lives and how we can solve the dilemma.
